Siemens To Construct 1,220 MW Power Plant in Malaysia

Siemens said it has received order from Malaysia’s state-run petroleum corporation Petronas for the turnkey construction of the Pengerang co-generation power plant in Malaysia.

Siemens will be responsible for the turnkey construction of four co-generation units, each consisting of a gas turbine, a wasteheat recovery steam generator, a steam turbine, associated mechanical and electrical systems, and the instrumentation and control system, the company said in a statement.

Pengerang Power Plant

The Pengerang power plant will have an electrical capacity of about 1,220 megawatts (MW). It will be one of the largest and most efficient gas-fired power plants in Malaysia.

In addition to electricity, the power plant will supply 1,480 tons per hour of steam for the RAPID petrochemical complex, which is currently being developed by Petronas. It is expected that unit one will go online as early as May 2017.

Also, the order includes a long-term maintenance and service agreement, Siemens said.

Chief Executive: Perfect Tool To Help Malaysia Becoming Leading Oil And Gas Hub

“Our proven and highly efficient H-class gas turbine technology is the perfect tool to help Malaysia becoming a leading oil and gas hub while meeting growing domestic demand at the same time”, stated Roland Fischer, CEO of Siemens Energy’s Power Generation Division.

The co-generation plant will be part of the Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC), which is planned to comprise a world-scale Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development (RAPID) and other associated facilities.

“Malaysia is the second largest oil and gas producer in Southeast Asia and the second largest exporter of LNG globally, with large proven natural gas reserves. The government’s main objective is to increase the production capacity by 5% every year up to 2020 to meet domestic demand growth while sustaining crude oil and LNG exports to overseas markets – taking advantage of its strategic location at key shipping lanes as well as strong economic fundamentals in China, India and within Southeast India”, according to a Siemens statement.
