China has improved safety at coal mines in 2013 and fewer accidents were reported last year compared to 2012.

According to the Chinese government, there were 589 mining accidents in 2013, leaving 1,049 people dead or missing.
The central government, however, did not disclose 2012 figures. But it said that 2013 numbers represents a 24% decrease, The Associated Press Jan. 5.
Industry reports from a year ago reveal that more than 1,300 people died in mining accidents in China in 2012 and 1,973 died in 2011, according to the State Administration of Work Safety. These figures do not include missing people.
